Sex Toy Care

How do I care for my sex toys?

Different toys require different types of care, depending on the materials they are made from and what they are used for. Caring for your toy properly not only provides better safety measures for you but also prolongs the longevity of your toy. Below is a general guide for how to care for and clean your toys.

Using Sex Toys

  • Never use a sex toy not designed for the purpose intended. Using it improperly can lead to damages to your toy & can potentially be unsafe to you. Many sex toys can be used safely on most external parts of the body but be sure to check the user manual to be sure and always use your toys how they are intended, internally
  • Broken toys. You should discard sex toys that are damaged or broken.

Toy Cleaners & Lubricants

  • Using lubricants: To better enhance the overall experience you have with your sex toy always use a suitable lubricant. Water-based lubricant is recommended for toys made of silicone. Flavoured lubricant is only recommended for external use, and not for internal use. Oil and Vaseline ARE NOT COMPATIBLE and can cause damage to latex based materials including condoms. See our Lubricant Compatibility Chart for more info.
  • Wash your sex toy before and after use with warm soapy water and anti-bacterial toy cleaner or wipes. Ensure your toy is absolutely clean to avoid any risk of infection. Do not let any water into the battery compartment of your toy. For toys that are not waterproof, wiping them down with a warm, soapy washcloth or wipe will usually do the trick. Toys that are washed regularly will last longer.
  • Cleaning porous toys: (cyberskin, nylon, neoprene, jelly rubber, vinyl, leather) These toys are more sensitive to temperature so you won't want to use hot water when cleaning. Warm, soapy water is sufficient.
  • Use condoms! The easiest way to ensure your toy is 100% sanitary is to cover it with a condom. This is especially helpful with porous toys that can be harder to sanitise. The condom should cover as much of the toy as possible for the most effective barrier. If you're using a condom on a porous toy, it's best to use one that is made of polyurethane as porous toys are softened with mineral oils which will cause latex condoms to deteriorate. If using on silicone toys, avoid condoms lubricated with silicone. Some silicone lubricants can cause your silicone sex toy to deteriorate.

USB Rechargeable

  • Charging time: Always be sure to charge your sex toy for the amount of time recommended in the toy's manual. If you take it off charge too soon, your toy might not live up to its full potential.
  • Never leave your sex toy permanently charging. Overcharging your sex toy can kill the battery cells which can void the manufacturer's warranty.
  • Charging indicator: Most USB Rechargeable toys will have an LED indicator to let you know when it is fully charged. See your user manual for specific information about how to know when it is fully charged.
  • Switch it off when charging! Never turn your sex toy on while it is charging or when it is being cleaned.
  • Sealed USB ports: Many waterproof USB Rechargeable toys often come with a charging port that is covered with a silicone seal. The seal should stretch open to accommodate the charging pin. This seal allows you to use your toy in water but it can sometimes be difficult to pierce with the charging pin. You must never cut this open or use anything to loosen it to make it easier to insert the pin for charging. You will simply need to push the charging pin in firmly until it pushes through and clicks into place.
  • Open charging ports: Some waterproof toys come with charging ports that are open and not sealed. These will still work fine after being used in water, assuming you follow the recommended guidelines. It might be best to wait 24 hours after submerging into water before charging to ensure the port has had adequate time to dry.
  • Where to charge your USB toy: Your USB Rechargeable toys can be charged anywhere it can be plugged into a USB receptacle. You can even use your mobile phone adaptor to connect to the wall plug. Some USB ports will charge faster than others. Car chargers & wall outlets typically charge fastest.
  • Multiple USB toys! If you have multiple USB Rechargeable toys, you should avoid getting the charging cables mixed up! It helps to mark them or tag them somehow to indicate which cord goes with which toy.

Battery Operated

  • Waterproof vs Non-waterproof: Never use any toy that is NOT waterproof in the shower or bath. Always make sure your waterproof toy is TIGHTLY closed before immersing in liquid. Do not allow water into the battery compartment of ANY toy.
  • Battery Types: Heavy duty, Alkaline and some rechargeable battery types are NOT SUITABLE for pleasure toys. These batteries are TOO STRONG for vibrating toys and have a tendency to prematurely burn out the motor. To ensure maximum lifespan of your toy, we recommend the use of General Purpose batteries.
  • Rechargeable batteries may not be the best choice for sex toys. They are slightly larger than non-rechargeable batteries and may get jammed in the battery compartment. As they age, they can sometimes be weaker & may not give you the powerful vibrations you need. Another downside to rechargeable batteries is that they take time to charge. You want to be sure you have some spares on hand to rescue you if this happens during mid-play.
  • Battery Alignment: If your vibrator won't start, check to be sure the batteries have been inserted correctly. It's possible they may need to be switched around. Batteries should be placed in alignment with the '+/-' polarity to avoid leakage of acids.
  • Remove batteries when your sex toys are not in use. Battery powered toys may drain energy when inactive & the batteries may leak battery acid. Removing them will help your batteries will last longer & extend the shelf-life of your toy.
  • Keep it fresh! It's usually best to keep your fresh batteries on hand. Even better if you start your sex play with fresh batteries from the start. There's no greater killjoy than having to shuffle around for fresh batteries when you're on the verge of climatic bliss.

Toy Storage

  • Storage essentials: Keeping your toys stored in a clean space is important for maintaining hygienic standards and prolonging the lifespan of your toy. Bags & cases are good choices for toy storage.
  • Store your sex toys separately! Sex toys of different materials can damage each other when stored together. Some issues include discolouration, melting & changing shape. Storing toys together can also cause bacteria to transfer from one toy to another.
