Spring After Dark
15 September 2026

There’s something dangerous about the first warm night of spring. Maybe it’s the bare shoulders after months of layers, the way the city softens after dark, or simply the person sitting across from you, smiling like they already know exactly what you’re thinking.
One drink on the rooftop turns into another, and before long neither of them is checking the time.
She sits with one leg crossed over the other, slowly tracing a fingertip around the rim of her glass.
“You keep looking at me.”
He doesn’t even try to deny it. “Should I stop?”
Her smile answers before she does.
“No.”
The breeze moves across the rooftop, warm against their skin. Somewhere below, traffic hums and glasses clink from another bar, but up here everything feels pleasantly distant.
She leans in slightly.
“Want to play a game?”
His eyebrow lifts. “That depends.”
“One question each. You have to answer honestly.”
“That sounds dangerous.”
“That’s the point.”
One Question Too Far
It starts harmlessly enough. Most embarrassing date. Worst excuse for cancelling plans. Biggest guilty pleasure.
Then she pauses, watching him over the edge of her glass.
“What’s something you’ve wanted to try with someone, but never actually said out loud?”
He laughs under his breath. “You went straight for that one?”
“You agreed to the rules.”
He glances around the rooftop, then back at her. Nobody is close enough to hear, so he tells her.
Her expression changes almost immediately. Not shock. Interest.
A slow little smile appears.
“That’s your big secret?”
“You’re judging me?”
“Definitely not.”
She moves her chair a little closer.
“I’m wondering why you haven’t tried it yet.”
His hand rests on the table between them. Hers settles beside it, close enough for their fingers to brush.
Neither moves away.
The Walk Home Gets Interesting
By the time they leave the rooftop, they’ve forgotten all about keeping the questions innocent.
The walk home turns into a confession booth with better lighting. They talk about things they’re curious about, things they’ve imagined and things they might be brave enough to try with the right person.
She nudges his shoulder.
“You’ve thought about this more than you’re admitting.”
“So have you.”
“Maybe.”
She pulls out her phone.
“What are you doing?”
“Research.”
That gets a laugh.
She opens Sexyland, and for the next few blocks they scroll together, shoulders touching as they walk.
A couples toy catches her attention.
She stops.
“What about this?”
He studies the screen. “You picked that very quickly.”
“I know what I like.”
The look she gives him makes it clear she isn’t only talking about the toy.
They keep browsing. Something playful. Something a little bolder. Something neither of them would have chosen alone.
Each new discovery turns into another question.
“Would you try that?”
“Maybe.”
“With me?”
“That depends.”
“On what?”
“How nicely you ask.”
By the time they reach home, the shopping basket isn’t the only thing feeling full of possibility.
Spring Nights Were Made for This
Inside, the windows stay open and warm air moves through the room as they pour another drink and kick off their shoes.
The rooftop flirting hasn’t faded. If anything, being alone only makes it harder to pretend this is still casual.
She sits beside him and opens her phone again.
“One more look?”
“At the toys?”
“At everything.”
They scroll slowly this time, less like they’re shopping and more like they’re daring each other to admit what catches their attention.
He pauses on one.
She notices.
“That one?”
He looks at her. “Maybe.”
Her smile deepens.
“You’re getting brave.”
“You started this.”
“True.”
She leans closer, shoulder pressing lightly against his.
“So what else haven’t you told me?”
He laughs. “You really don’t let things go.”
“Not when they’re interesting.”
The room goes quiet for a moment, but the silence feels playful rather than awkward.
That’s the thing about curiosity. Once you start talking about what you want, it becomes harder to pretend you haven’t been thinking about it all along.
They keep scrolling, teasing each other over every choice, saving a few favourites for later and laughing at how quickly one innocent drink turned into something much more tempting.
Some spring nights are made for going home early.
This clearly isn’t one of them.
