Anal Douching 101: How to Use an Anal Douche Properly
Anal play with sex toys and with partners is becoming more common, and as a result, so is anal douching! While douching isn’t necessary before anal play, plenty of folks prefer the peace of mind that comes with knowing they’re clean and clear in the rear so they can focus on enjoying themselves rather than worrying about poop making an unexpected appearance—if you fall into that camp, here’s your comprehensive guide on all things anal douche! 💦🍑
What is anal douching?
Anal douching is a process that involves flushing the rectum with water as part of anal cleaning before getting down to backdoor business, which minimises transfer of bodily fluids onto toys and reduces the risk of embarrassing moments during intimate encounters (though if it does happen, don’t feel bad as it’s more common than you think). The best fluid to use is saline solution or plain water without soaps.
Does anal douching have any side effects on the body?
If you’re using tap water, refrain from douching more than once a week as even the tap water from countries where it’s safe to drink the tap water can contain electrolytes that upset your body’s inner balance if introduced to your rectum too often.
In fact, it’s best not to use an anal douche too often in general, as this can irritate or damage your rectum’s inner mucus lining (A.K.A ‘rectal mucosa’) and disrupt your natural bacteria levels, which can increase your chances of getting infections. Another unpleasant side effect of frequent douching is constipation problems, where your body may start to need a douche/enema in order to poop, so save the anal cleaning for special occasions only if you can!
Different methods of anal douching
- Anal douche bulb: this is one of the most common types of anal douche, and also among the most affordable. It usually includes a rubber or silicone bulb and a nozzle that you insert into the bulb, and then yourself.
- Water bag douche: this anal douche consists of a bag that’s similar to a hot water bottle that you can hang high on a hook and squeeze manually, or let gravity do the work. One end has a long tube that inserts into your rectum, and there’s usually a flow-control adapter included. The easy-to-use design is quite portable, but it also requires frequent cleaning and replacement to avoid infections.
- Saline enemas: these are over-the-counter anal douching kits that come with pre-lubricated nozzles and are normally sold as laxative treatments for people experiencing severe constipation, but you can also safely use them for anal cleaning purposes (just be sure to get the kind with plain saline solution, not the medicated laxative type).
- Shower hose attachments: this is a hose you attach to your shower or bathtub water supply to use for deep anal cleaning. These can be a bit trickier to use and are generally recommended for experienced users. Take care to make sure that the water pressure and the water temperature are both at safe levels, and if you’re not sure where to start, start lower than you think because you can always turn it up later as needed.
How to douche for anal sex or using anal sex toys
- Ensure the douche nozzle is clean before beginning to avoid introducing bacteria into your body (a warm water rinse and some antibacterial adult toy cleaner should do the trick).
- Detach the nozzle and fill the bulb with water that’s a little cooler than lukewarm—water that’s too cold will shock your system and water that’s too hot can burn your insides, so err on the side of caution!
- Lubricate the nozzle tip with a water-based anal lubricant to make insertion easier, smoother, and more comfortable (we recommend the Wicked® Jelle Thickened Water-Based Anal Gel Lubricant due to its ultra-thick, cushioning texture). Just take your time easing the nozzle inside yourself, and don’t rush or force things as this can lead to tearing, swelling, or bleeding, especially if the nozzle has a rough seam or is stiff and inflexible.
- Squeeze the bulb to release the water inside you and try to hold it inside yourself. You can hold your breath for this part, then breathe out and relax to release the water. Repeat the process and refill the bulb with more cool water as needed until the water eventually runs clear and doesn’t smell, and you’re all done!
